The Brooklyn Invitational motorcycle show– photography by Steve West

“In it’s 8th year, the Brooklyn Invitational is far from growing long in the tooth. The last couple of years has seen the invitations going to a broad range of builds and builders. This year was another broad range from the Quail winner of Revival Cycles to the wicked creation from Ehinger Kraftrad. The show wasn’t just inside Root Studios either, hundreds of bikes filled the streets for blocks in every direction. Also this year the annual Indian Larry block party was just around the block in their new location. There you could see every kind of bike you know with more than plenty that wouldn’t have been out of place inside the Invitational. If you didn’t make it this year or before, chances are good it’ll continue to be better and a relevant event to see what’s going on in the custom moto scene.” –Steve West of Silver Piston

In case you missed it (like me, drats!) — “Split’n Lanes and Dodgin’ Gutters” featured 50 hand-picked classic motorcycles ranging from the 1910s era through the early ’70s. These bikes were displayed throughout the spacious interior of Brooklyn Bowl’s music venue space, basking in the glow of the state-of-the-art concert lighting. Check out the video, it was a hoot! Corinna Mantlo from the Motorcycle Film Festival had her beauty of a BSA in the show.

IRON & AIR ISSUE NINE RELEASE PARTY | A TRAMP GROWLS IN BROOKLYN…

poster

So, I don’t know if you’ve heard– there’s a party coming to BROOKLYN. Iron & Air is throwing down for the release of Issue Nine at Fast Ashleys Studios— and you’re not gonna want to miss it. I might be slightly biased, but I ‘m pretty stoked that the bike built for me by Kevin Dunworth of Loaded Gun Customs will be unveiled that night, and will also be featured in Iron & Air magazine. There will be lots of local Brooklyn eats ‘n’ drinks– The Shop Brooklyn will be dishing out their special slow-cooked brand of goodness. And their will be plenty of badass bikes to ogle, and some cool art going on.

WILD AT HEART– VOGUE 1991 | THE EPIC PHOTOGRAPHY OF PETER LINDBERGH

In 1991, photographer Peter Lindbergh shot the elite eight of the world’s sexiest Supermodels in Brooklyn, NY for the September 1991 issue of American Vogue– Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz, Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Karen Mulder, and Stephanie Seymour. The shoot titled “Wild at Heart” was styled by Grace Coddington, featuring looks that were a hi-lo mix of Chanel meets Schott– and we in the fashion world have never been the same since. This iconic editorial spread continues to inspire and awe to this day– over 20 years+ later. The Brit bikes featured throughout really make this work– several Triumphs, and I think I even spied a BSA in there as well!

The 1990s was the decade of the Supermodel– Cindy Crawford, Tatjana Patitz, Helena Christensen, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Karen Mulder, and Stephanie Seymour. Marlon Brando as Johnny in the Iconic motorcycle film “The Wild One” which simultaneously thrust biking forward into the limelight in terms of popularity and style, while setting it back in terms of stereotypes and the court of public opinion. Marlon Brando rode his own 1950 Thunderbird in the film– a big boost for Triumph motorcycles. You can read more about that here.

THE BROOKLYN BLACKBIRD EVENT AT FAST ASHLEY’S STUDIOS | THANK YOU!

The Blackbird event— a collaboration between TSY, PRPS, TRIUMPH, and friend & photographer Scott Toepfer in celebration of denim & machine. The Blackbird jean was inspired by the 1953 Triumph Blackbird. Handmade of super rigid & raw 14 oz Japanese denim– these jeans are not for the faint of heart. The black hardware and Thunderbird (tail) inspired stitching on the back pocket pay homage to the iconic motorcycle. The event was held on 4/13, as only 13 pairs of the Blackbird jean were made. Why 13 pairs? As a tribute to “The Wild One” starring Marlon Brando, that was based on the epic motorcycle clubs– 13 Rebels and The Boozefighters. Anywho– it was a helluva night! Thank you to Fast Ashley’s and everyone who came out! You winners out there that have my babies– please keep me posted on how they’re wearing, and send postcards & photos to info@selvedgeyard.com !
