  5. Man, thanks for the trips down memory lane! I attended about every Bike Week during those yrs and could swear I remember some of the customs shown. I keep looking for myself or my van in the background. Keep em comin!

  9. These pictures from Daytona are awesome! I attended Bike Week in 81 and it was great. I spent four months in Daytona that winter training to be a motorcycle mechanic. We used to hang out at the Boot Hill Saloon on wednesdays, quarter night. I remember standing at the bar talking to my friend telling him I rode a Honda back home. This huge guy standing next to me at the bar leaned over : Hey I wouldn’t say that so loud if I were you, not here. Really friendly though.

    • I don’t see any Nazis. I see a guy wearing a death-head and swastika.

      I agree that wearing a swastika is insensitive and ignorant. It’s a symbol that’s been around for over 3,000 years, and yes – it will now forever be known as a symbol of hate, death, and ugliness.

      The swastika has been widely co-opted by not just bikers, but also remember the Sex Pistols did it too, and there have been many others over the years who’ve used it as a way to create shock, publicity, controversy, etc. It’s a cheap & easy way to look tough, anti-establishment, blah, blah, blah.

      It’s a statement of rebellion for this guy, probably more than anything – and yeah, wearing one isn’t cool. But he’s got a right to, just like you have a right to call him on it.

      • As JP points out, “it’s a statement of rebellion.” At one time, bikers wearing Nazi memorabilia was just an expression of their bad-assness (and in the 50s, may even have been trophies that they looted as soldiers in WWII). Many of us here are too young to remember what it was like before being called a “racist” or a “Nazi” was The Worst Insult EVAR, but back then, wearing Nazi symbolism was just a way to flip the bird at “straights” (i.e., regular people) and their society.

        Funny how now, it’s totally unacceptable to wear Nazi symbols, but it’s “cool” to wear a picture of the leftist mass murderer Che Guevara.

        Note: this is in NO WAY to be construed as support or sympathy for Nazism. It is an observation on the change in societal views and values.

  12. I don’t which is cooler: the panel-fade gladiator helmet or the airbrushed Vampirella scene on the tank in the other shot!

    And so true on the swastika–a common motif in the 1% culture of the day: what better symbol for a simple shock and awe campaign. Hell, looks like it’ still working…
