I have always wanted to know more about Morrison’s ’67 Shelby Mustang GT500 and why we never hear so much as a peep about it. Shouldn’t it be the prize of someone’s car collection? I went in search of the story behind the legend’s mysterious car and found Bret Matteson had done some digging–

One Friday night Morrison was driving recklessly and struck a telephone pole on Sunset Blvd. He jumped out of the car to check the damage– frustrated and most likely wasted, he walked up the street to Whiskey A-Go-Go and continued his evening. Hours later, he made his way back to where he had left the Shelby– which now was long gone. Now the mystery starts.

According to some sources, Morrison never followed up on the accident or even tried to find out what had happened to the wrecked Shelby. Touring with The Doors and his crazy lifestyle already had many distractions, and a minor car accident probably wasn’t too big on his list.

Another interesting story worth mention– some say Morrison drove the Shelby GT500 to LAX and left it there for an quite some time while he was touring and traveling–when he returned the Shelby had been towed away and sold at public auction. We’ll probably never truly know what happened to it. Someone may very well have all or part of it right under their feet and not even know it.
Below is an experimental film Morrison made starring his Shelby–
